Easton Hospital is First in the Lehigh Valley to use New Smartphone Compatible Cardiac Monitor to Detect Arrhythmias

Physicians can now remotely monitor patients for even the most difficult to detect cardiac arrhythmias, including irregular heartbeats.

Easton Hospital is the first hospital in the Lehigh Valley to use the new Abbott smartphone compatible Confirm Rx™ Insertable Cardiac Monitor (ICM), the world's first and only smartphone compatible ICM designed to help physicians remotely identify cardiac arrhythmias.

The Confirm Rx™ ICM is the world’s first smartphone compatible ICM to help physicians identify even the most difficult to detect cardiac arrhythmias, including atrial fibrillation (AF), in order to help guide therapy. The Confirm Rx ICM is designed to continuously monitor a patient's heart rhythm and proactively transmit information via Bluetooth wireless technology to Abbott’s myMerlin™ mobile app, allowing physicians to follow their patients remotely and accurately diagnose arrhythmias that may require further treatment.

“Bluetooth technology and a smartphone-based app allow patients and their caregivers continuous remote monitoring. This eliminates the need for home-based transmitters,” explained Daniel Mascarenhas, MD, Easton Hospital Interventional Cardiologist. “Data is sent automatically to me about changes in a patient’s heart rhythm during their daily activity, allowing me to make a diagnosis and to provide appropriate care”.

An arrhythmia is an abnormal heart rhythm that develops when disease or injury disrupts the heart's electrical signals, causing the heart to beat erratically. As the heart begins to beat too fast or too slow, changes in blood flow can expose patients to symptoms such as palpitations, dizziness, shortness of breath or fainting.

“We are proud to be the first hospital in the Lehigh Valley to utilize this important diagnostic technology,“ said Jeffrey Snyder, President, Easton Hospital. “This reaffirms the quality of care we deliver by always striving to offer patients the latest in medical technology to improve care.”

Once implanted—just under the skin in the chest during a quick, minimally-invasive outpatient procedure—the Abbott Confirm Rx ICM continuously monitors heart rhythms to detect a range of cardiac arrhythmias, including irregular heartbeats, or atrial fibrillation.

While the Confirm Rx ICM continuously monitors for abnormal heart rhythms and transmits data to a patient’s physician, the myMerlin app also allows patients to track symptoms proactively, sync their data with their clinic at any time, and view their transmission history without having to contact their clinic to confirm successful data transfers.
